Certified Industrial School for Girls (approximate site of)

Largely due to Fanny Heaton's influence, the Heatons were great patrons of educational charities of all kinds.  On 27 Dec. 1878, Heaton recorded that girls from the ‘Certified Industrial School – to the number of 70, came to sing hymns & have tea.’  This school, situated at Windsor House, Windsor Street, Burmantofts, was effectively a reformatory school for girls deemed out of control, homeless, or in danger of falling into prostitution.  It was run by the Leeds School Board, and in 1896 it moved out of Leeds to the Thorp Grange estate at Thorp Arch, Boston Spa.
